Tortas are Mexican Sandwiches. Filled with savory filets of meats, Tortas are economical ways to grab a quick meal. A Milanesa takes a thin filet of beef and coats it with egg, breadcrumb and seasonings. It is reminescent of a chicken fried steak, but is much more delicate both in coating and texture. The Milanesa is most akin to the Schnitzel from Eastern Europe and Germany. The Torta Milanesa from La Paletera is a generous portion of Milanesa combined with a mayonnaise dressing, lettuce, tomato, jalapenos and served between a freshly buttered bun. The flavor is both familiar and not with the core flavor reminescent of a chicken fried steak sandwich, but the spices and seasonings taking the whole to another level. The Torta Pollo features thinly sliced and grilled chicken that is seasoned with garlic and peppers. The Torta is topped with beans, avocado slices, and mayonaise along with lettuce and tomatoes. Sliced japanenos are offered on the side to give the Torta the flavors of the chile peppers while adding a spiciness that complements the savory flavors of the meat.
La Paletera's Corn Cups combine corn on the cob with mayonnaise, salt, lime, chili, sour cream, and parmesan cheese along with seasonings to produce a flavor that is definitely unique. Each bite is filled with the strong seasonings that somewhat overwhelm the sweetness of the corn and the creaminess of the sour cream. The combined saltiness of the parmesan cheese and the salt make the cup extremely savory and can be difficult to handle for some palates. The Aguas Frescas from La Palatera are refreshing drinks made from freshly squeezed fruits and rice. The Watermelon Aguas Fresca makes an excellent complement to the savory dishes and helps to smooth out the strong flavors. The Watermelon Aguas Fresca tastes exactly like biting into a fresh slice of watermelon and has none of the off flavors that one would usually find in juices from subtly flavored fruits. The Horchata is nicely balanced in not being too sweet and not too thick. The result is a refreshing drink that combines the richness of the rice with the accents of the cinnamon.
La Paletera offers Austin a refreshing alternative during the blistering summer months. Its healthy fruit options make a great alternative to sugary snacks. Those in the mood for cool and creamy refreshments are also in luck with the myriad of options available. The unique selection offer a glimpse of the flavors of Mexico with the local convenience of the roving Paleta carts. Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register.
