Roadside stands selling fresh cut fruit and cold refreshing paletas are a common sight on the streets of Mexico. At almost every corner, one can choose from chili, lime and salt covered fruit, aguas frescas, paletas, or other delicious ways to beat the heat. La Paletera brings the delights of Mexico to Austin with several area locations. Let's take a trip south of the border and see some new ways of beating Austin's sweltering heat.

On a hot summer day, the faint jingling of the paleta cart can send both children and adults scrambling after the purveyor of cold refreshing treats. A quick way to cool down, paletas are Mexican popsicles made with fresh fruit, aguas frescas, or ice cream-like flavors. La Paletera takes the concept of a paletas cart and expands upon that with a myriad of fresh fruit cups, snowcones and ice cream choices. For those in the mood for something savory and hot, La Paletera also offers several varieties of tortas (mexican sandwiches) and corn cups.
The colorful visage of the La Paletera store front is decorated with cartoons of various types of paletas and fruit cups. Photos of the actual items along with the menu number adorn the door and counters of the restaurant. For those new to Mexican refreshments, the photos are extremely helpful in seeing what one is ordering. Otherwise, pick a random item on the menu and it most likely will prove to be tasty and interesting.
Paletas are interesting in that sweet is not necessarily the flavor of the popsicle. Often, a paleta can be a combination of salty and tangy, sweet and spicy, or any variation thereof. The paletas carry on the flavor combinations available with the fruit cups with SLC (salt, lime, chili) being available in the Chamoy paleta.
