Catfish are extremely popular in Thai and Vietnamese dishes in which the tender meat of the catfish can often be found either steamed or heavily spiced with a palate searing sauce.

The seafood section continues with a vast variety of seafood not ordinarily seen in western markets with squid, octopus and fish roe being offered in addition to the more traditional fare.

The word "fishballs" usually elicits a look of disgust or confusion.  When the description changes to finely chopped fish blended with a mixture of spices and seasonings and formed, the perception should hopefully improve.  Either way, fishballs, shrimpballs, cuttlefishballs and meatballs are foundational ingredients in the soups and dishes of many Asian countries.  The flavors can range dramatically depending on the base meat and mixture of spices used in preparation.  One dish in which fishballs can often be found is the morning Congee or savory porridge.

MT Supermarket / My Thanh Supermarket brings to the Austin area a cournicopia of ingredients that form the basis of many Asian cuisines.  It is a must visit for those who have been curious about Asian culinary culture.  One thing that is currently missing and should perhaps be added is a bakery/deli section in which more options in prepared foods can be offered.  It will be interesting to see how the fledgling Chinatown Center in Austin develops and what new culinary adventures might be in store.
