MT Supermarket or My Thanh Supermarket, the anchor store of the brand new Chinatown Center on North Lamar brings to Austin its first full sized Asian market. While there have been smaller markets scattered around the city in the past, the opening of the MT Supermarket marks the start of Austin's very own Chinatown. In many ways reflective of the multi-cultural population of the North Lamar, the new center promises to bring new avenues of culinary exploration to our fair city. Join us now as we take our first look at the unique foods available.

For years, the large lot of land on North Lamar promised a grand Asian shopping center with markets, restaurants and shops. While many of the restaurants and shops have yet to move into the shopping complex, My Thanh had its grand opening this past week, announcing both its opening and that of the Chinatown Center. Like the larger Asian supermarkets in Houston, MT offers a wide selection of fresh and prepared food items from an inclusive array of countries around the Pacific Rim.
The center of the My Thanh Supermarket is taken up by a vast array of freezers bearing frozen delicacies from around Asia. From frozen meats, seafoods to fruits and prepared foods not found in this country, the selection varies dramatically from row to row. Freshly prepared rice dumplings, sesame balls and other sweet and savory foods are available in front of the frozen section.
Immediately to the right lay a myriad of products from snacks, candies, and cookies to prepared sausages and canned goods. In many ways, this section represents products that have newly arrived or might not be found elsewhere in the store. It's definitely a good area to hunt down unique snacks for the adventurous. Adventurous is the key word in this case since My Thanh's offerings represent products used by immigrant populations from the Pacific Rim Asian countries. As such, authenticity is also linked with items that might be new and perhaps shocking. It is important to keep in mind that while cultures differ, the love of food is universal. With that in mind, let's continue to our next section. Please click below to continue to fresh tofu, bamboo, and delicacies of the sea-
