There are two distinct camps of glazed donuts.  One offers the light airy pastryesque version from the likes of Krispy Kreme.  The other is decidedly more substantial and is closer to what is considered traditional donuts.  People tend to have a strong preference for one or the other with very little middle ground.  Both can be found executed to the pinnacle of its particular form.  Ultimately, which one is better?  You decide.  Today, we are here to talk about a little bakery with a long history in the small town of Round Rock.

 Round Rock Donuts

Round Rock Bakery, the home of Round Rock Donuts is known for their unique golden yellow glazed donuts.  Light and airy, but with a billowy bready substance, the donuts find a balance between pastry and bread.  The texture is most simiar to the inside of a freshly baked loaf of bread.   The counter contains the famous donuts along with kolaches, muffins and other assorted pastries.  Round Rock's sausage in a blanket are also a popular alternative to the sweet selections.

Whole loaves of white and wheat breads are available to the side of the pastries.  Pies are available in many varieties, from the requisite pecan to the more rare blackberry.  The pumpkin bread, though tasty, is available in a tube-shaped form which speaks of its breadmaker origin.

Round Rock Donuts

The glazed donuts are large and oval with a light drizzle of yellow colored glaze.  The outside of the donut is golden brown and the inside is a bright yellow.  The combination is one that is unique to the Round Rock Donut and has been featured by shows on both the Travel Channel and Food Network.  It is entirely too easy to forget how many one has had in a single sitting.  Even with a small group of people, a dozen can only last for a fairly short time.

The pig n blankets are surprisingly light in texture and are a hidden surprise from Round Rock Bakery.  Too often, pig n blankets suffer from bread that is too dense or is soaked on the bottom with grease.  Even from places known for their pig n blankets, the problem seems to pervade.  While the Round Rock rendition might not be as authentic as some others, the result is certainly delicious with a smoky aroma that quickly wafts throughout.

Round Rock Donuts

The sampler pack contains a variety of donut and pastry selections from Round Rock Bakery.  The filled donuts take the same dough used in the Round Rock Donut and adds custard, fruit jelly, or chocolate to create a myriad of flavor variations.  The sausage wrap is a more substantial variation of the pig n blanket with a heavier breaded crust and different sausage.  In some ways, the sausage wrap is closer to the pig n blankets at Polish style bakeries.

Round Rock Bakery brings a unique selection of sweet and savory delights that is worth scoping out whenever the sweet tooth strikes.  The donuts offer unique texture and rich flavor that cannot be found anywhere else.
