Page 4: Pies, pies and more pies! Page 4 of 4
The bread pudding is a dark, thickly sliced, substantial portion of dessert. Loaded with pecans, drizzled with a sweet syrup and served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, the dessert is almost a meal by itself. However, Foodquest would be remiss if it didn't cover the Royer's most well known claim to fame, the pies...
We begin with Bud's Chocolate Toll House Pie topped with vanilla ice cream. Imagine a thick chocolate chip cookies with an assortment of pecans strewn throughout the batter. The effect has the chewiness of a freshly baked cookie with the intensity of an entire layer of chocolate. The pecans add a butteriness that helps to accentuate the flavor of the pie as a while. Royer's unique pie crust wraps up the combination by lending a crumbly/flakiness to the dessert.
Sam's Coconut Chess Pie piles on an extremely thick layer of coconut and melds it together with the sweet buttermilk mix from the Buttermilk pie. It is definitely strong on the coconut scale and is something that is definitely unique. The texture and flavor of the coconut is similar to a Mounds chocolate bar without the chocolate, but where the coconut in the Mounds bar is somewhat acerbic, the coconut in the Royers pie is complemented by the richness of the buttermilk mix. The result is sweet, yet rich, reminescent of a buttermilk pie, but with texture..
Cherry pies have a bad rap for the most part. Cherry pies are often too sour or too sweet with very little middle ground in between. For that reason, many people tend to shy away from them. The Royers' offering blends a sweet syrup with the tanginess of cherries in a way that is neither too sour or too sweet. The strong polar flavor elements are balanced out and serve as a lovely accompaniment to the warm and flaky pie crust. The slightly savory nature of the pie crust helps to enhance natural flavor of the cherry while complementing the soft texture of the filling with a nice crispness. The cherry pie has a lovely aroma that is only enhanced by warming up the slice. When served with vanilla ice cream, the rich sweetness works well with the flavor much like milk with cookies.
If it were for the entrees alone, The Royers Round Top Cafe would already qualify as a Foodquest Destination. The uniqueness and variety of entrees combined with the sheer unabashed intensity of the flavors makes a definitive statement in the world of bland cuisine. When combined with the enviable selection of pies and desserts, the uniqueness of this restaurant truly stands out among others. Foodquest is proud to present the Royers Round Top Cafe with the first ever Foodquest Destination. From Dallas to Houston and everywhere in between, it is definitely worth the drive to visit. |
